While the ice sheet was likely in balance (i.e., ice mass gain was balancing ice mass loss) during the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s (Mouginot et al. 2019), it began to lose mass in earnest beginning in the mid- to late 1990s.

However, it is likely that the relatively high end of season SMB will mean a zero or close-to-zero total mass budget this year, as last year. The period 2003-2011 has seen ice sheet losses on Greenland averaging 234bn tonnes each year. The neutral mass change in the last two years does not – and cannot – begin to compensate for these losses.

2019-03-11 · Greenland Ice Sheet Surface Mass Balance 2017/18. http://www.dmi.dk/en/groenland/maalinger/greenland-ice-sheet-surface-mass-budget/# As I reported last September, Greenland’s ice sheet mass balance had grown at close to record levels for the second year running. To clarify again, the mass balance calculation accounts for: 1) Snowfall. 2) Ice melt Daily (upper chart) and cumulative (lower) surface mass budget of the Greenland ice sheet, in billion tonnes per day, and billion tonnes, respectively.

Even back in 2015, there was this record of gaining ice. Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has for the second year shown record ice growth across the Greenland Ice Sheet, but NASA shows a 281 gigaton loss, oops Greenland; glaciology; sea level; climate change; glaciers; In the last several decades, the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) has lost mass to the ocean (1 ⇓ ⇓ ⇓ –5).The mass loss has been quantified by three independent techniques using changes in ice volume (6, 7), time-variable gravity (), and input versus output fluxes or mass budget method (1, 2, 4, 9 ⇓ –11), for the time period 1992 Bottom: The accumulated surface mass balance from September 1st to now (blue line, Gt) and the season 2011-12 (red) which had very high summer melt in Greenland. For comparison, the mean curve from the period 1981-2010 is shown (dark grey). Balancing act. Comparing the total snowfall and surface melt against each other gives you the “surface mass balance”. At the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI), we use output from a numerical weather forecasting model combined with data from observation stations on Greenland to estimate the surface mass balance for the whole ice sheet for every single day.

Marine-terminating glaciers are the outlets via which the Greenland ice sheet discharges ice mass to the ocean. When in balance, the rate of iceberg calving (by area) is equalized by the seaward flow of the ice (see the essay on Greenland Ice Sheet Surface Velocity: New Data Sets, 2015 Arctic Report Card for further information on the velocity

27 Aug 2018 – This chart from the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) speaks for itself. The blue line shows Greenland ice-mass balance as of today. It is far, far greater than the mean – the average, if you will – from 1981 to 2010 (dark grey line). I doubt that you’ll see this reported by the mainstream media.

Almost all of the ice loss was due to changes in surface mass budget, with thinning found virtually everywhere. At some locations, the ice sheet surface decreased by over two and a half metres per year between 1995 and 2017 based on measurements using space-borne radar altimeters.

This is based on the mass-budget method using an optimized, down- Surface mass budget, the net gain or loss of ice at a location, is an important indicator of ice sheet health. Two thirds of the Greenland ice sheet's current mass loss stems from its surface mass budget with iceberg production accounting for the remaining mass loss. The focus of PROMICE is maintaining a network of automated climate stations in the ice sheet melt area to observe surface mass budget. When you look at the blue lines on the above graphs, it is quite evident that the Greenland Ice Sheet surface mass budget is far, far higher than the mean.

Credit: DMI Polar Portal This year our analysis suggests Greenland discharged around 498bn tonnes of ice. Factoring in these additional processes, we can calculate the total mass budget for the ice sheet for the year. For 2018-19, we estimate the ice sheet has seen a total net ice loss of around 329bn tonnes. The mass loss has been quantified by three independent techniques using changes in ice volume (6, 7), time-variable gravity , and input versus output fluxes or mass budget method (1, 2, 4, 9 ⇓ –11), for the time period 1992–2016 or 2002–2016.

The launch in 2013 of the website polarportal.dk (polarportal.org in English, a joint production of DMI, GEUS and DTU-Space) now allows anyone to check the current “health” of the Greenland ice sheet, including glacier front positions for selected outlet glaciers based on satellite image and an estimate based of total mass balance using a product developed from GRACE satellite gravity
